1911
Of humble beginnings, Alec Quinton leaves his parents in England at 19 years of age for a new life in Canada. He settles in Winnipeg and founds Quinton Dye Works in 1911 at the corner of Jessie Avenue and Daly Street, specializing in the dying and laundering of peoples clothes. (At the time it was common for people to “renew" the appearance of their wardrobe by dyeing garments.)
1911 - 1918
In the early years, Quinton's is purely a pickup and delivery operation, placing significant demands on company vehicles and drivers. In this photograph from 1911 we see founder Alec Quinton standing next to one of Quinton Dye Works delivery vehicles whose “open to the elements" design must have provided many challenges for their drivers during Winnipeg winters.
1918
Upon completing his service in defense of the Empire in World War I, Alec Quinton's brother Sidney comes to Canada to join the growing business.
1922
Alec leaves the business, granting Sidney full ownership of the company. Under Sidney's leadership the dry cleaning and laundry company continues to expand its operations.
1945
Sidney Quinton's eldest son Paul joins the firm. He would later become president and co-owner of the Quinton family business, retiring in 1987.
1952
Paul's younger brother Richard, known to most as Dick, joins the company as co-owner and secretary treasurer, ushering in the second generation of family members to own and manage the business. Like his brother, Richard Quinton also retires in 1987.
1950s
Winnipeg's post war growth and suburban expansion, as well as the emergence of two car families, creates increasing demand for retail dry-cleaning services. Quinton's business flourishes, adding several new stores throughout the city.
1968
Quinton closes its original cleaning plant at the corner of Jessie Avenue and Daly Street, moving operations to the company's current location off Pembina Highway.
1970s
During the 60's and 70's it was a common practice to package freshly cleaned shirts around a stiff piece of cardboard. Always on the cutting edge, Quinton's uses this dry cleaning standard to market its services with the addition of some clever poems based on popular nursery rhymes. The inserts, which double as colouring pages for children, are an instant hit with Quinton's customers.
1987
With demand for its industrial rental and uniform services growing rapidly, Quinton's establishes a separate company, Quintex Services Ltd., to handle this side of the business. The third generation of the Quinton family begins managing the company's traditional dry cleaning and industrial rental operations at this time.
1992
To complement its uniforms rental business, Quintex launches its direct sale garments division under the brand Todd Uniforms for Business. This service is now provided under the Quintex brand - Q Custom Clothing.
2000
The Quintex Services portion of the business continues to prosper, developing a reputation for innovation and superior service within the Manitoba market. And, much like the company's earlier days, Quintex Services relies on a fleet of trucks and vans to service its customers.
2002
With the continued success of its industrial rentals and uniforms services, the company sells off its 16-store dry cleaning operations (under the Quinton's Cleaners brand) becoming solely Quintex Services Ltd. David Quinton continues in the role as president and CEO of the company.
2009
Responding to needs in the market, Quintex continues to introduce new value added services for its customers including embroidery capabilities.
2011
Quintex Services celebrates a century in business, an achievement that is the direct result of the continued commitment to excellence of countless dedicated employees over the years. In reaching this milestone it enjoys the trust of more than 2,500 Manitoba businesses.
2011
The City of Winnipeg honours Quintex on its 100th Anniversary with an Organizational Community Service Award. City Councillor and Winnipeg Jets Hall of Famer Thomas Steen presents the award to third generation owner, David Quinton, on behalf of the Mayor.
2014
Quintex completes their most recent rebranding. Trucks, website, building, letterhead - the sleek new logo and "Quintex blue" colour create a consistent and recognizable look while maintaining a connection to the company's history.
2015
The Q-Crew is established. Building on Quintex’s tradition of community service, the Q-Crew takes Quintex’s philanthropic initiatives to the next level. Cleaning “green” and protecting our environment is essential to Quintex and the wastewater system helps to achieve that goal.
