Is A Scraper Mat Sufficient?

We often say that the scraper mat is the first line of defence in trapping dirt. Being the first mat encountered might lead to the misconception that it can sufficiently keep a facility clean. However, while scraper mats are crucial for removing large debris like grit and sand, relying solely on them can create a false sense of security. In most facilities, multiple mats are necessary and often complemented by occasional mopping to effectively maintain cleanliness. Today, we will explore why relying solely on a scraper mat, or a single mat alone, is not enough to keep your facility clean. While it is an excellent first line of defence against dirt, the right combination of mats is essential for sustaining a cleaner environment.

Understanding Scraper Mats: What They Do

A scraper mat is typically placed outside a doorway or in the vestibule area, designed to withstand harsh environmental conditions. Made from durable nitrile rubber, these mats are well-suited for extreme weather changes, particularly in Winnipeg, where we endure extremely cold winters. The nitrile rubber not only provides durability but also ensures that the mat stays in place, preventing shifting or warping over time.

Equipped with prominent ridges, scraper mats effectively scrape off coarse dirt and debris from shoes, making them a crucial component in maintaining cleanliness. However, while scraper mats play a vital role in the initial defence against dirt, they are just the first step in a comprehensive mat strategy.

The Importance of Multiple Mats: The 3-Mat System

When it comes to floor mats, we have a variety of options to choose from. However, the three main mats to consider as part of an effective entry system are the scraper mat, the waterhog mat, and the classic mat.

As previously mentioned, the scraper mat is responsible for removing larger debris, grit, and dirt from shoes as people enter your facility. Next in the system is the waterhog mat, which is designed to trap up to 1.5 gallons of water per square yard. Constructed with a nitrile rubber backing and PET fibres, this mat is resistant to stains and dries quicker than other floor mats. Its bi-level design helps scrape off any remaining dirt while trapping it in grooves, preventing it from being tracked further into the facility. This mat is ideally placed immediately after the scraper mat.

Lastly, you may encounter a classic mat, commonly seen in various facilities. This mat is positioned in high-traffic areas following the scraper and/or waterhog mats, providing an additional layer of dirt control. The unique high-twist design of a classic mat helps shift dirt to the bottom, effectively trapping it in place until it can be commercially cleaned. Unlike other mats, which may allow dirt to remain on the surface, the design of a classic mat ensures that dirt is pressed deeper into the mat with continuous foot traffic, preventing it from being easily tracked into your facility.

Why a Single Mat Isn't Enough: Step Count and Cleanliness

Now that you’re familiar with the three major mats to consider, it’s crucial to understand why relying solely on a scraper mat—or any single mat—is insufficient for maintaining cleanliness. Research from ISSA indicates that approximately 85% of dirt is trapped within the first 15 feet of matting, which typically accounts for about 5 to 7 steps.

In some facilities, there may be enough space to accommodate this length of mat coverage, while others may face spatial constraints that limit mat placement. This underlines the importance of considering your facility's layout to ensure you can implement effective matting solutions that allow for those essential 5 to 7 steps.

Further insights from a study conducted by CNA Insurance reveal the effectiveness of different mat coverage based on climate conditions. In dry climates, such as during the summer, a mat length of 15 to 20 feet is ideal. In rainy conditions, typical in spring or early fall, 20 to 25 feet of matting is recommended. In snowy conditions during winter, extending mat coverage to 25 to 30 feet is essential to effectively trap dirt and moisture. This strategic approach not only enhances cleanliness but also contributes to a safer environment by reducing slip hazards.

Mat Placement Strategy: Maximizing Effectiveness

Another critical factor to consider is mat placement. As mentioned earlier, the sequence of mats should be positioned relatively close to one another to ensure safety and facilitate proper upkeep of cleanliness in your facility.

Typically, mats are placed near high-traffic areas, such as entrances. Near doorways, it is important to consider clearance, to ensure doors can properly function even when matting is in place. Additionally, high-traffic areas can include spaces where people tend to gather, such as waiting rooms or lobbies.

By strategically placing mats in these key locations, you can maximize their effectiveness in trapping dirt and moisture while maintaining a safe environment for your visitors and staff.

To further enhance cleanliness, especially in facilities experiencing higher foot traffic, consider utilizing dry or wet mops, which are also available for rent at our facility. After implementing an effective matting system, any residual dirt tracked on floors should be significantly reduced, and can be swept away with the use of a dry or wet mop.

To conclude, relying solely on a single mat, such as a scraper mat, can be insufficient for keeping your facility safe and clean. Instead, a comprehensive mat strategy—including a scraper mat, waterhog mat, and a classic mat as a base system—can significantly enhance the longevity of cleanliness in your facility. Additionally, considering mat placement and understanding how different climates affect matting needs can help set realistic expectations and provide insight what matting will work best in some situations over others.
